Each year, we have two youth leaders who help shape and guide Phipps’ Youth Advocacy Committee. These positions are part of the cohort, but have higher expectations to perform in a way that models the traits of a great leader and communicator to our committee members. We are seeking diverse leaders with a range of skills and interests, especially in areas of the arts, science, technology, and community outreach. We currently have the high school leader position filled. We encourage college-aged youth with a strong sense of leadership, teamwork, enthusiasm, and passion for the environmental justice and advocacy to apply for the leader position.


Job Description:

The Youth Advocacy Committee is comprised of two leaders and 15-20 youth members. Being a committee leader is an hourly paid position beginning in September and ending in April 2023. Committee leaders can expect to attend weekly meetings every Monday night at Phipps Conservatory and perform tasks averaging 3-6 hours per week.

Eligibility: 

Students must be at least 16 years old to apply for this opportunity. Strong communication skills and previous climate action experience are preferred.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Model and guide collaboration and teamwork within the committee, provide opportunities to strength committee bonds, assist with team building activities, motivate and inspire committee members
  • Assist with leading meetings and workshops on climate education, activism, leadership, advocacy and science communication
  • Organize group discussions around environmental topics such as climate justice, sustainability, water quality and management, food systems, natural resources, ecology, and green technology
  • Take a leadership role in advocacy work within schools, local organizations and communities
  • Network with and engage young people in other cities; model resource-sharing and collaboration between other likeminded youth
  • Work closely with Phipps staff and other local organizations
  • Proactively guide Phipps Conservatory in advocating for the environment and climate justice

Essay: In one to two pages, please describe why you would like to be a youth climate advocacy committee leader.  In your essay, please state the following:

  • Your motivations for participating in the Phipps Youth Climate Advocacy Committee
  • How you feel you can be an effective leader in a diverse group (e.g. age, personality)
  • What skills you can model as a leader of other youth and an environmental advocate
  • What experiences/background/perspectives you can bring to the group
  • What skills, interests, and passions you have to contribute
  • How this opportunity will benefit your education and career goals
  • Environmental topics that you are passionate about
