There's always something new to see and do at Phipps! This weekly blog post provides a run-down of the latest happenings so you can plan your visit. Events listed below require no advance registration unless noted otherwise. 

Open Daily (Extended Hours 9:30 a.m. – 11 p.m. Except Thurs., Sept. 7):

  • SUPER. NATURAL. Glass Art by Jason Gamrath
    Ten years after Chihuly at Phipps, master glass artist Jason Gamrath brings a new twist to the art form, creating remarkably accurate botanical pieces on a massive scale, standing up to 14 feet tall.
  • SUPER. NATURAL. Nights  |  Open Until 11 p.m.  Nightly Except Thurs., Sept. 7
    Stay for the evening and experience the beauty in a whole new light as the sun goes down and the mesmerizing SUPER. NATURAL. glass art begins to glow.
  • Make the Switch at Phipps! Green Power Drive
    Join the more than 1,000 families who have switched their home electricity to 100% green power while visiting our Tropical Forest Conservatory and you can receive free Phipps membership!
  • Native Edible Plants: A Botanical Art Exhibit 
    On display in our Center for Sustainable Landscapes Green Gallery, this collection of work from students of our Botanical Art and Illustration program highlights native edible plants of southwestern Pennsylvania.
  • Tropical Forest Congo
    Explore some of Africa’s lushest landscapes and see botanical specimens never before showcased at Phipps.

Mon., Sept. 4:

  • Make-a-Craft Mondays  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Create your very own Phipps masterpiece! Every Monday, children are invited to engage in nature-inspired arts-and-crafts projects using recyclable materials.

Wed., Sept. 6:

  • Story Time Wednesdays  |  10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics.
  • Green Market at Phipps  |  2:30 – 6:30 p.m.
    Refresh your lifestyle! Visit our front lawn to browse a colorful cornucopia of organic and sustainable goods from local vendors.
  • Biophilia: Pittsburgh  |  5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required
    This month's meeting will feature J-P Malocsay, who will lead the discussion on gardening in the city. 

Thurs., Sept. 7:

Fri., Sept. 8:

  • Little Sprouts: Apple Trees and Me  |  9:30 – 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. – noon  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Learners ages 2 – 4 will unearth the reason why trees have fruit as they explore the apple trees here at Phipps.
  • Pot-a-Plant Fridays  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Every Friday, children are introduced to the important connections between people, plants and the planet by potting their own fun plants to take home.
  • Fall Round Up  |  1 – 7 p.m.  |  Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
    Headed to Mellon Park's annual Fair in the Park? Stop by our Shop in the Park at Phipps Garden Center, where we’ll be hosting a special sale on the patio along with a variety of other local vendors.
  • Kids' Night Out: Butterfly Magic  |  6 – 8 p.m.  |  Ages 4 – 13  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Discover the world of some of nature’s most popular pollinators. Plus, learn a special magic trick!
  • Party in the Tropics  |  7 – 11 p.m.  |  Ages 21+
    Make our paradise your own as you indulge in sweet and savory morsels, taste unique cocktails, and dance to the beats of a live DJ in our Tropical Forest Conservatory. Entry is free with Conservatory admission.

Sat., Sept. 9:

  • Nature Journaling at Jennings Prairie  |  9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Spend the day at Jennings Prairie observing and documenting native plants. You will be provided with a journal, a list of plants currently in bloom, a map of Jennings Prairie and general instructions on nature journaling.
  • Fall Round Up  |  10 a.m. – 7 p.m.  |  Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
    Headed to Mellon Park's annual Fair in the Park? Stop by our Shop in the Park at Phipps Garden Center, where we’ll be hosting a special sale on the patio along with a variety of other local vendors.
  • Homewood Good Food Festival  |  11 a.m. – 3 p.m.  |  7100 Block of Kelly Street in Homewood
    Join us for an afternoon of family fun to celebrate food grown and prepared in Homewood.
  • SEED Classroom and Observational Beehive Open Hours  |  11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    Phipps' revolutionary non-toxic SEED Classroom and observational beehive are now open for you to discover. Drop in! 
  • African Foods  |  1:30 p.m.
    Meet Ola Appetit Catering and explore how African foods have been translated in the Americas.

Sun., Sept. 10:

  • Family HIIT with Let’s Move Pittsburgh and YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh  |  9 a.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Join us on the front lawn for a free, family-style high intensity interval training (HIIT) class presented by the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh and Let’s Move Pittsburgh.
  • Fall Round Up  |  10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  |  Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
