There's always something new to see and do at Phipps! This weekly blog post provides a run-down of the latest happenings so you can plan your visit. Events listed below require no advance registration unless noted otherwise. 

Open Daily:

  • Summer Flower Show: Gardens of Sound and Motion 
    Featuring contemporary installations by artists from Pittsburgh and beyond, this unique new show immerses you in a colorful world of eye-catching, interactive art, music and sounds.
  • Butterfly Forest
    Celebrate with us and delight in the return of our fluttering pollinator friends and their favorite blooms on the opening of this breathtaking exhibit!
  • Tropical Forest Cuba
    Experience the natural beauty and culture of Cuba, one of the most biodiverse Caribbean island nations on Earth, in our immersive new Tropical Forest exhibit.
  • Make the Switch at Phipps! Green Power Drive
    Join the more than 1,000 families who have switched their home electricity to 100% green power while visiting our Tropical Forest Conservatory and you can receive free Phipps membership!
  • Natives for Your Garden: A Botanical Art Exhibit
    Stop by the Phipps Welcome Center to see our latest botanical art exhibit, “Natives for Your Garden,” featuring plants native to southwestern Pennsylvania that you may recognize from your own backyard!
  • Member Appreciation Month
    Phipps is dedicating the month of August to our members with a quartet of fun exclusives! Join us for our Member Bring-a-Friend Day on Thurs., Aug 23 and Member Double Discount Day in the Gift Shop on Tues., Aug 28.
  • Petals and Pollinators: A Youth Art Exhibition
    In the Center for Sustainable Landscapes Green Gallery, enjoy multimedia artworks depicting fictional flowers and their co-evolution with specific pollinators as created by middle and high school students involved in Phipps’ Fairchild Challenge environmental competition.

Mon., Aug. 20:

  • Make-a-Craft Mondays  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Create your very own Phipps masterpiece! Every Monday, children are invited to engage in nature-inspired arts-and-crafts projects using recyclable materials.

Wed., Aug. 22:

  • Story Time Wednesdays  |  10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics.

Thurs., Aug. 23: 

  • Story Time Thursdays  |  10:30 a.m.
    Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics.
  • Member Bring-a-Friend Day
    The serene atmosphere at Phipps is best accompanied by friends and family, so we encourage Phipps members to share the beauty with a nonmember free of charge!

  • Planning Your 2019 Garden  |  1:30 p.m.
    Get ready for 2019 and start planning your garden with Tim Choltco in our Tropical Forest Conservatory.
  • Nature Lab Open Hours  |  11 a.m . – 3 p.m.
    Phipps' revolutionary non-toxic Nature Lab is now open for you to discover.

Sun., Aug. 26:

  • Tomato and Garlic Day  |  11 a.m.  – 4 p.m.
    Visit Phipps to celebrate the delicious, fresh and healthy foods of the summer season at our 14th annual Tomato and Garlic Day! Join us on our front lawn to shop for fresh fruits, vegetables and specialty goods from area vendors.
  • Tasty Tomato and Garlic Gnocchi  |  11 a.m –  noon |  R.S.V.P required
    Discover the role of sustainable citizenship in environmental preservation, and learn the anatomy and pollination methods of the tomato plant.

  • Fresh Salsas and Traditional Mexican Sopes  |  1  –  2 p.m.  |  R.S.V,P required 
    Our Let’s Move Pittsburgh team will lead a hands-on cooking class on how to make fresh red and green salsa as well as corn-based delicious sopes from scratch.

  • Essential Oils  |  1:30 p.m.
    Learn about essential oils with Lori Rothschild in our Tropical Forest Conservatory.
