Volunteer Spotlight: Ben Guthrie

By Abby Krick

Phipps is well-known for our beautiful gardens, seasonal flower shows, pioneering sustainability initiatives, informative educational programs and community outreach. None of our work, however, would be possible without the knowledge and dedication of our volunteers. In this series of profiles, we meet some of the people who give their time to make Phipps possible.

When he’s not in class or listening to the Beatles, Duquesne student Ben Guthrie can be found volunteering in the greenhouses with the horticulture staff. Ben has been with Phipps since 2018, and enjoys working with tulips, orchids and African violets. While working in the greenhouse, Ben has felt very welcome with all of the friendly people he meets at Phipps. When he is offsite, you can find Ben playing ping pong, enjoying a drink from Starbucks or playing the bagpipes on the campus of Duquesne University.
