Volunteer Spotlight: Ben Guthrie

By Abby Krick

Phipps is well-known for our beautiful gardens, seasonal flower shows, pioneering sustainability initiatives, informative educational programs and community outreach. None of our work, however, would be possible without the knowledge and dedication of our volunteers. In this series of profiles, we meet some of the people who give their time to make Phipps possible.

When he’s not in class or listening to the Beatles, Duquesne student Ben Guthrie can be found volunteering in the greenhouses with the horticulture staff. Ben has been with Phipps since 2018, and enjoys working with tulips, orchids and African violets. While working in the greenhouse, Ben has felt very welcome with all of the friendly people he meets at Phipps. When he is offsite, you can find Ben playing ping pong, enjoying a drink from Starbucks or playing the bagpipes on the campus of Duquesne University.

Great job Ben!  We really enjoyed the tour you gave us of where you work and seeing all of the beautiful flowers.

I am honored to be Ben’s aide while he is volunteering in the greenhouse.  He enjoys his time working and socializing with all of his friends.  Hope to see you soon!

We’re so proud of our great nephew. He is a multi-talented guy and a joy to be around. My husband and I hope to visit your lovely gardens sometime in the future and have Ben give us a private tour. Thanks for recognizing him for his excellent work.

Ben,

Thank you for all you do at Phipps.  Although I do not live in Pittsburgh anymore, I am still enjoying the orchid exhibit!  Thank you for all your hard work to make Phipps such a wonderous place to visit (either in person or virtually).

Regards,
Terri Anne

Those flowers are so lucky to be tended to by such an amazing young man! So great to see Ben in the spotlight, and there is nothing more infectious than his laugh! Go Ben!

So glad to hear about your work at the Phipps Conservatory, Ben. We didn’t realize you were doing that. We could use your help with African Violets. Taking care of them requires a special touch.

I look forward to visiting Phipps and hope to time it when Ben can give me a tour! Thanks for your important work Ben!
