Phipps, which had been run by the City of Pittsburgh since 1893, became a privately managed nonprofit in 1993, paving the way for a multitude of landmark changes to the public garden's campus, educational programs and organizational mission, including a name change to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in 1997.
