Last Week in Science Education Programming

By Carolyn Carlins, Facilitator, Phipps Science Education and Research

Last Week in Science Education Programming is our weekly seasonal segment featuring education programming. This is the place for camp parents to find pictures of their campers in action and see all the fun things we did throughout the week. It’s also a great place for educators to pick up craft, story and lesson ideas for their own early childhood programs!

On Thursday, Our Upcycled Carnival ran in conjunction with the ‘Let’s Move Pittsburgh’ Symposium. Let’s Move Pittsburgh is a collaborative program that spans across several organizations in Southwestern Pennsylvania, based out of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, that is committed to addressing children’s health in our region, and aims to raise awareness about the benefits of healthy foods, increased exercise and decreased screen time for children. During this program, our campers explored the many different ways to have fun while staying healthy and active. We played carnival games, crafted our own aprons, and met experts from Phipps who taught us how to keep ourselves and our planet healthy!

Last Friday, was all about food in our CSL Classroom during our Evening Ed-venture, Fun with Food. Our 6-9 year old scientists were cooking with energy as they learned about the plants our foods come from. From investigating food in the conservatory to making their own aprons, campers went on a culinary adventure to explore plants from all over the world. Campers even had a chance to sample healthy pizza made by a real chef! Join us December 11th for our next Evening Ed-venture, A Night in the Tropics!
