Mini Grants Provide Funding for School Programs That Focus on Improving Children's Health

Champion School Applications Now Open

Pittsburgh, PAPhipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and Let’s Move Pittsburgh are pleased to announce that applications for Champion Schools Awards are now open through Wed., April 1, 2020 at 10 a.m. Early childcare centers, pre-kindergarten and elementary schools, grades K – 8 in Allegheny County are invited to submit applications to fund new and existing programs that promote children’s health and well-being. Winners will be announced on Fri., May 1.

Let’s Move Pittsburgh will award up to 40 Champion Schools for programs that focus on one or more of the following areas:

  • Bag the Junk: Increase healthy food and nutrition education in schools
  • Get Kids Moving: Increase physical activity in and out of schools
  • Teach Kids to Grow and Cook Food: Increase knowledge of how to grow and prepare fresh, healthy food
  • Sustainable Citizenship: Expose students to a variety of environmental topics to make a great impact in the community

Winners will receive special recognition and a mini-grant of $1,000 to fund their project, improving children's health and well-being. Applications will be scored by multiple reviewers using three criteria: need, sustainability and impact.

Who May Apply: Educators, administrators, students, food service directors, school nurses, and/or parents on behalf of a licensed early childcare center, pre-kindergarten or elementary school, grades K – 8 in Allegheny County. School may receive one award per calendar year. Winners from previous years are eligible to apply for the 2020 awards.

Application Timeline: Completed applications must be submitted by Wed., April 1, 2020 at 10 a.m. Winning applicants will be notified by Fri., May 1.
