Phipps Conservatory Receives Great American Gardener Award from American Horticultural Society
Phipps Recognized for Commitment to Sustainability

Pittsburgh, PA – Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is honored to receive the Garden Sustainability Award from the American Horticultural Society (AHS) as part of its annual Great American Gardeners Awards. Established in 1953, the awards aim to recognize extraordinary contributions to horticulture across various areas and are among the most prestigious horticultural awards in the U.S.

Great American Gardeners Awards are bestowed upon eight individuals or institutions each year, each for a different category. The Garden Sustainability Award category celebrates a public garden that is setting the bar for sustainable design, maintenance, and programs.

“The American Horticultural Society’s esteemed recognition sends the message that showcasing beautiful horticulture, providing learning opportunities, tackling local ecological challenges, and aggressively addressing our changing climate are all essential roles of public gardens today and are proof that beauty and environmental responsibility can grow together,” said Phipps President and CEO Richard Piacentini. “Phipps is honored to be recognized among fellow changemakers in horticulture and further inspired to continue growing a greener future for all.”

Among the achievements recognized by this award are Phipps’ multiple leading-edge green buildings, including the Center for Sustainable Landscapes; more than 100 adult education courses offered each year; Sustainable Landcare training for landscape professionals; and The Climate Toolkit, its alliance of 256 institutions from 30 countries serving more than 128,750,000 annual visitors who work together to aggressively address climate change and inspire their guests to do the same.
