A Celebration of Seeds: Seventh Annual Seed and Plant Swap

Swap seeds, acquire tips and get ready for a great season of gardening.

Gardening season is on its way, and Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Grow Pittsburgh and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh are here to get you started on the right foot and share tips for a great year of growing your own food in your home and community. Our annual Seed and Plant Swap features a bustling seed exchange, conversations with expert gardeners, hands-on activities for children and teens, and a selection of free seeds and plants for the public. The fun takes place at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh on 4400 Forbes Avenue in Oakland, just down the street from Phipps!

Seeds that have been donated by generous local seed companies will be available for free — and we strongly encourage everyone to bring your own commercial or saved seeds for swapping (open-pollinated, non-hybrid, non-GMO seeds, please!). Attendees who to bring seeds to share will gain early entry to the swap at 11 a.m. and be entered to win raffle prizes.

Free workshops will help beginning gardeners and seed savers learn exciting new skills, including:

  • Seed Saving Basics | 12 – 12:45 p.m.
  • Seed Starting Basics | 1 – 1:45 p.m.
  • Organic Gardening Basics | 2 – 2:45 p.m.

Other event features include:

  • hands-on activities for children and teens in the library's Children's Department and Teen Space
  • gardening experts available to answer questions throughout the event
  • a Share Your Seed Stories station with mobile photo booth
  • and more!

This event is free and open to the public. We look forward to seeing you there!
