Phipps Conservatory and Penn State Extension to Host In-Person Summer Short Course
In-Person Event on Essential Skills and Rationale for Saving Seeds

Pittsburgh, PA – On Tues., July 28, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and Penn State Extension invite gardening enthusiasts to spend the day learning essential skills and rationale for saving seeds from edible, native and woody plants in our landscape. Saving seeds is an ancient practice, but one which remains essential to preserving the genetic diversity in our landscapes. With a robust line-up of local experts, attendees will learn about an array of topics.

Summer Short Course sessions will include the following:

  • Growing Resilient Forests: Why Local Genetics Matter | Megan Higgins-Palomo
  • Wild Seeds....Great Plants! | John Totten and Linda Kramer
  • Small Scale Seed Keeping  | Madison McLean
  • Saving Vegetable Crops | Amirah Mitchell

Summer Short Course, presented by Phipps and Penn State Extension, will be held in-person on Tues., July 28 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Registration costs $95 on or before Wed., July 1. After July 1, the cost is $105. This event will be held in the Special Events Hall at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This conference counts for Master Gardener Continuing Education credit, and elective hours for Phipps certificate programs: Ecological Gardening and Landscape and Garden Design.
