Celebrate two of summer’s most bountiful crops with a special week of learning and growing to support an important cause.

Join Phipps to celebrate the delicious, fresh and healthy foods of the summer season at a very special virtual edition of our annual Tomato and Garlic Day celebration! For the 16th annual installment of this Pittsburgh tradition, we’re bringing you four fun evenings of learning for all ages — and proceeds benefit the important work of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Virtual Tomato and Garlic Days registration costs $15 per household per day or $50 for all four days of presentations. All sessions will be held live online via Zoom, and ingredient lists will be sent in advance for those who want to cook along! Login instructions will be sent via email prior to the event.

Event Schedule

Day 1 – Mon., Aug. 24

How to Get Five Harvests from Growing Your Own Garlic
Doug Oster, garden writer and KDKA-TV and radio contributor
6 – 7 p.m.

Only garlic growers can experience the joy of five different harvests from their garlic crop. Garlic fanatic Doug Oster will explain the right way to plant garlic and discuss how it can be picked and used several ways.

 

Indian Tomato Chutney
Chef Jayashree Iyengar, owner, Popping Mustard Seeds
7 – 8 p.m.

Chef Jayashree’s love for delicious food began when she was growing up in Chennai, India. Today she’ll teach you her special recipe for Indian Tomato Chutney.

 

Day 2 – Tues., Aug. 25

Italian at Home: Tomato Vinaigrette
Chef Emily Larsen, owner, Spilling the Soup
6 – 7 p.m.

Join Chef Emily as she whips up a delectable warm cherry tomato vinaigrette to spoon over poached cod and garlicky couscous. These simple ingredients lead to an unforgettable meal that could become one of your weeknight staples.

 

Café Phipps Roasted Tomato Soup

Join Café Phipps general manager Chef Amy Reed as she teaches you how to make a delicious roasted tomato soup in the signature style we serve at Phipps!

 

Day 3 – Wed., Aug. 26

Fueling Your Garden Workouts
Maris Altieri, registered dietitian and Let’s Move Pittsburgh coordinator
6 – 7 p.m.

Did you know that what you eat before, during and after workouts can affect your performance? Learn about the basics of building energizing and replenishing pre and post garden workout snacks with Registered Dietitian and Let’s Move Pittsburgh Coordinator Maris Altieri. LMP Program Coordinator Sarah Cullo will also share a few pre-gardening stretches.

 

Shakshuka
Chef Emily Larsen, owner, Spilling the Soup
7 – 8 p.m.

An easy-to-prep skillet dish, shakshuka packs a cornucopia of delicious flavors into a dish that is suited to breakfast, lunch or dinner. Learn how Chef Emily prepares her shashuka and get inspired to make your own variation – the possibilities are limitless!

 

Day 4 – Thurs., Aug. 27

Fresh Tomato Pasta
Mark Snyder, Cook2Eat2Live
6 – 7 p.m.

Everyone loves the taste of fresh, homemade tomato sauce! Join Mark from Cook2Eat2Live as he shows you an easy, delicious recipe the whole family will enjoy.

 

Garlic Is Love
Doug Oster, garden writer and KDKA-TV and radio contributor
7 – 8 p.m.

There's nothing like the smell of garlic in the kitchen. Garlic fanatic Doug Oster will create two of his favorite Ultimate Garlic Recipes using 100 cloves of garlic (50 for each recipe).

Attendees of Virtual Tomato and Garlic Days will also receive an exclusive PDF of recipes prepared by our vendor partners; while we won’t be able to host them in person this year, many have arranged alternative ways to pick up their products.
