There's always something new to see and do at Phipps! This weekly blog post provides a run-down of the latest happenings so you can plan your visit. Events listed below require no advance registration unless noted otherwise.
- Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show: Out of This World
Blast off into a galaxy of garden goodness in this stellar new show as you enjoy the colors and shapes of hundreds of otherworldly orchids and our cosmic collection of tropical bonsai.
- Garden Railroad: Farms, Food and Family
Discover farms that impact our daily lives in our fun and family-friendly Garden Railroad.
- Ikebana and Suiseki: Welcome Center Art Exhibit
In this new exhibit in our Welcome Center Gallery, view Ikebana flower arrangements and suiseki, Japanese viewing stones.
- Wish You Were Here: A Youth Art Exhibition
In the Center for Sustainable Landscapes Green Gallery, enjoy a series of paintings by participating Fairchild Challenge high school students.
- Planets Earth
A dynamic exhibit at the Center for Sustainable Landscapes addresses the pressing environmental issues of our time and proposes a new way of thinking about how to solve them.
- Tropical Forest Cuba
Experience the natural beauty and culture of Cuba, one of the most biodiverse Caribbean island nations on Earth, in our immersive new Tropical Forest exhibit.
- Make the Switch at Phipps! Green Power Drive
Join the more than 1,000 families who have switched their home electricity to 100% green power while visiting our Tropical Forest Conservatory and you can receive free Phipps membership!
Mon., Feb. 4:
- Make-a-Craft Monday | 10 a.m. – noon
Create your very own Phipps masterpiece! On Make-a-Craft Mondays, children are invited to engage in nature-themed arts-and-crafts projects.
- History of Landscape Design | 7 – 9 p.m.
A garden’s form and the sense of place it creates can only fully be understood by studying the culture and individuals who brought it into existence. Learn to apply knowledge of garden history in evaluating today’s materials and spaces.
Wed., Feb. 5:
- Story Time Wednesday | 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Come to Phipps for story time among the flowers. Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics.
Thurs., Feb. 6:
- Biophilia: Pittsburgh February Meeting | 5:30 – 7 p.m.
Join us on Thurs., Feb. 6 in the Center for Sustainable Landscapes Classroom with Barbara Martin and Dr. Patricia DeMarco, as they get wild – wild about native plants that is! Learn about how the Late Bloomers Garden Club engaged the Forest Hills Borough as well as themselves with the planting of a certified pollinator-friendly community garden. Thinking about planning your own community garden? Our speakers will show you how native plants enhance a landscape and make a difference in a community.
- Valentine's Day Date Night | 6 – 9 p.m.
Take your Valentine’s Day date night to a new level this year. Join Chef Andrew ‘Red’ Jacobson from The Porch at Schenley for a demonstration style class as he prepares a romantic three-course Valentine’s Day dinner. Wine will also be served.

- Pot-a-Plant Friday | 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Kids can pot their own plant to care for at home.
Sat., Feb. 8:
- Tropical Forest Cuba Festival | 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Join us for a full day of fun activities for all ages at our Tropical Forest Cuba Festival, featuring entertainment, food and more inspired by one of the world's most botanically and culturally rich forest regions.
Sun., Feb. 9:
- Tropical Sundays | 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

- February Member Days | 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Pittsburgh's leading cultural organizations are coming together to say to "thank you" to their dedicated supporters. On select days in February, members will receive free admission* to a participating attractions. Just show your photo ID along with your membership card for free admission (no pre-registration needed). Plus, enjoy a 10% discount in the museum stores and a special discount on membership for the day.
- Broadleaf Evergreens | 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Explore Mellon Park and identify different types of conifers using a planting map. Then, learn how to portray the conifer of your choice, illustrating the entire tree or a detailed part.
- Digital Photography | 9:30 a.m. – noon
Explore different aspects of photography through the use of a digital camera. Topics to be covered include digital workflow, camera settings, composition, image transfer and viewing preparation. Subjects like white balance, jpeg versus raw formats, and histograms will be demystified so that they can be used as reliable tools. As you practice, you will receive instructor feedback on weekly photographic assignments. People with all levels of experience are welcome.
- Origami | 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Learn the art of origami from the Origami Club of Pittsburgh in this free with admission public program!
