Last Week in Science Education Programming

By Carolyn Carlins, Facilitator, Phipps Science Education and Research

Last Week in Science Education Programming is our weekly seasonal segment featuring education programming. This is the place for camp parents to find pictures of their campers in action and see all the fun things we did throughout the week. It’s also a great place for educators to pick up craft, story and lesson ideas for their own early childhood programs!

On Friday December 11th, Phipps campers went on an expedition to the rainforest for the Evening Ed-venture, A Night in the Tropics. Equipped with recycled binoculars and notebooks, our 6-9 year old scientists explored the plants of the tropics. Campers examined leaves, seeds and trees of the tropical forest to learn about how plants adapt to warm, wet climates.

In the Tropical Forest Congo campers made observations about plants such as the cocoa tree, banana tree and peanut plant. After learning how plants adapt in the tropics, we explored the Outdoor Garden to find plants suited to our own climate. Back in the CSL Classroom, we ate healthy fruit kababs and made our own tropical ecosystems by assembling terrariums. Hope to see everyone back again in the new year!
