Meet Let’s Move Pittsburgh Program Assistant Ashlee Cubarney

By Let's Move Pittsburgh

Let’s Move Pittsburgh had the pleasure to sit down with Program Assistant Ashlee Cubarney to discuss her role in helping our region's families stay healthy. Read on to learn more!

LMP: Tell me a bit about your background.

Ashlee: I graduated from Slippery Rock University with a bachelor’s degree in public health and interdisciplinary programs with a focus in women’s studies and nonprofit management. I have a background in HIV prevention and also nutrition education. I have worked with adults and children, and I hope to continue helping people live healthy lives from birth into adulthood.

LMP: What aspect of your job at Phipps are you most interested in?

The aspect that interests me the most is the wide variety of things Let’s Move Pittsburgh does. We give mini grants to schools, do work in the community, create useful resources, and partner with schools, childcare centers, health care sites and after school sites to attempt to provide consistent health messaging to children in all the areas they are exposed to. Seeing how all of the programs connect and use all of our team’s specific expertise is very interesting!

LMP: How do you hope the community benefits from the Let’s Move Pittsburgh program?

Ashlee: I hope the community finds our programs and resources helpful and they benefit from them by living healthier lifestyles.

LMP: What are ways that you try to live a healthy lifestyle?

Ashlee: I try my hardest to eat healthy and drink a lot of water every day. My parents instilled the importance of eating fruit and vegetables in me at a very young age and that has stayed with me into my adult life. Broccoli, cucumbers, squash, grapes and plums are some of my favorites!

LMP: Do you have any personal goals for the New Year?

Ashlee: I hope to make more time to be active because exercise is so important to health. My busy schedule keeps me from being as active as I’d like to be, but some ways I like to be active are hiking, kayaking, walking and playing sports even though I’m usually not that good!

LMP: Where are your favorite places to be active in or around Pittsburgh?

Ashlee: I love to walk in North Park since it is close to my house and has some beautiful scenery! I also enjoy going to McConnell’s Mill State Park, even though it’s a little far away. When I went to Slippery Rock University and was further north I use to take hiking trips up there as often as I could. McConnell’s Mill is huge and has amazing rock structures, I would recommend it to anyone who loves to hike and admire the scenery!
