Ask Dr. Phipps: Saving Perennials

By Phipps Master Gardeners

Q: This summer I bought several perennials. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I did not have time to plant them. I am worried that they will die over the winter.  Should I leave them outside in their pots, bring them inside (if so where should I put them), or leave them outside on my patio which is outside but has an awning over it? Please help as I have a good bit of money invested and I really love them and want to keep them!

A: If you can, dig a few holes and put the plants in, pot and all. You can remove them next spring and plant them properly. Another alternative is to group the plants together and cover them up with a tarp and add mulch or leaves on top. This should keep them insulated over the winter and allow you to uncover and plant in the spring. Do not bring them inside – these plants need the cold winter temperatures. Burying them outside is best, if you are able.
