There's always something new to see and do at Phipps! This weekly blog post provides a run-down of the latest happenings so you can plan your visit. Events listed below require no advance registration unless noted otherwise. 

Open Daily: 

  • NOW OPEN: Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show: Into The Mist  
    This year's all-new engaging displays feature outstanding orchids and brilliant bonsai placed amid an evocative combination of water, mist and special lighting that provide a whole new way to enjoy fascinating specimens.
  • Garden Railroad: Pennsylvania Through the Four Seasons
    Garden Railroad: Pennsylvania Through the Four Seasons will divide our miniature world of trains, buildings and landscapes into showcases of the four seasons as experienced in distinctive PA fashion, with a beach, a county fair and a bike trail among many other whimsical and interactive features. 
  • COMING SOON: We ❤ Veg Week 
    Starting on Feb. 9, the Café is holding a plant based pop-up called "WE ❤ VEG WEEK" to celebrate Valentine's Day! From Feb. 9 –  15, the Café will be preparing meals that emphasize a plant-based diet. 
  • NOW OPEN: Color, Texture, Shape: The Art of Deborah Sudran
    A gifted painter fascinated with plants and nature, Deborah Sudran sought to communicate her emotional response to nature with compelling color and powerful imagery, including orchids, bromeliads and other species that complement the displays you'll see in the Conservatory.
  • Tropical Forest Hawai‘i: Aloha ‘Aina
    Tropical Forest Hawai‘i: Aloha ‘Aina invites guests to take an exciting, immersive journey through the rich history, nature and culture of the Hawaiian archipelago. 
  • Planets Earth Virtual Exhibit
    A dynamic exhibit at the Center for Sustainable Landscapes (and now online) addresses the pressing environmental issues of our time and proposes a new way of thinking about how to solve them.

Mon., Feb. 5:

  • History of Roman and Italian Gardens | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. 
    With their foundations in ancient Rome, Italian gardens flourished in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Using numerous drawings and photographs, you will visually tour several villas that represent significant changes in style and design philosophies, from the initial gardens of Roman emperors to those of wealthy merchants and religious leaders.

Wed., Feb. 7: 

  • In-Person Story Time | 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Kids will love visiting Phipps to listen to our storyteller weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics. Attend weekly sessions with a special child in your life.
  • Member-Only Education Series: Orchids 101 | 6 – 7 p.m.
    Join us for our a members-only education program where you will learn the esstentials of orchid care, including how to get them to grow and reflower for you at home.
  • Pressed Flower Stained Glass |  6 – 8 p.m.
    Get crafty with us on a small scale! Preserve natural wonders and your memories into a cabinet of curiosities that you can cherish in the form of your choosing.
  • Timeless Roses | 7 – 8:30 p.m.
    You just received wrapped roses (or are planning to gift roses to someone) – Now what?  In this demo, learn to create designer styled roses using easily attainable vases.

Thurs., Feb. 8: 

  • Members-Only Ask Phipps Anything | 7 – 8 p.m.
    Are you pondering a mystery from our glasshouse history? Looking to uncover the secrets of Pittsburgh's green oasis? At this virtual event, members will have the chance to ask their burning Phipps questions to a team of representatives from varying departments via Zoom.
