There's always something new to see and do at Phipps! This weekly blog post provides a run-down of the latest happenings so you can plan your visit. Events listed below require no advance registration unless noted otherwise. 

Open Daily:

  • Fall Flower Show: Japanese Inspirations 
    Celebrate Phipps' tradition of spectacular Fall Flower Shows — the longest-running in the United States — with a tour of Japan's exuberant festivals and gorgeous botanical design. 
  • Garden Railroad: Farms, Food and Family 
    Discover farms that impact our daily lives in our fun and family-friendly Garden Railroad. 
  • Invasive Plants of Southwestern Pennsylvania: A Botanical Art Exhibit 
    Our display in the Welcome Center, Invasive Plants of Southwestern Pennsylvania exhibits art and illustrations from the Flora Project, a collaboration between Phipps’ Botanical Art and Illustration program and the Allegheny Highland Botanical Art Society, and features the work of Phipps students. 
  • Homegrown: The Power of Community
    In the Center for Sustainable Landscapes Green Gallery, discover the impact of Phipps' edible garden program on the health of our region's families.
  • Planets Earth
    A dynamic exhibit at the Center for Sustainable Landscapes addresses the pressing environmental issues of our time and proposes a new way of thinking about how to solve them.
  • Tropical Forest Cuba
    Experience the natural beauty and culture of Cuba, one of the most biodiverse Caribbean island nations on Earth, in our immersive new Tropical Forest exhibit.
  • Make the Switch at Phipps! Green Power Drive
    Join the more than 1,000 families who have switched their home electricity to 100% green power while visiting our Tropical Forest Conservatory and you can receive free Phipps membership!

Mon., Oct. 28:

  • Make-a-Craft Monday  |  10 a.m. – noon
    Create your very own Phipps masterpiece!  On Make-a-Craft Mondays, children are invited to engage in nature-themed arts-and-crafts projects. 
  • Herbs from the Witch's Garden  |  7 – 9 p.m.
    Discover the mystical qualities of herbs and how you can use them to bring a little bit of magic into your life. 

Wed., Oct. 30:

  • Story Time Wednesday  |  10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Come to Phipps for story time among the flowers. Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics.
  • Gluten Free Pizza Night  |  6 – 9 p.m. 
    Whip up quick and delicious gluten free pizza dough and assemble your own creation.

Fri., Nov. 1: 

  • Restful Sleep, Healthy Mind |  9:30 – 10:30 a.m. 
    Have a child who is struggling with bedtime? Are you struggling with getting adequate sleep as well? Kids Plus pediatrician, Dr. Wolynn will give you the tips, tricks, secrets and strategies you need to solve your child’s sleep problems. You’ll have fun, learn a lot and leave empowered — armed with all the tools you need to make every night at home a quiet, restful night for you and your whole family.
  • Pot-a-Plant Friday  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Kids can pot their own plant to care for at home.
  • Movie Night: Mirai  |  7 – 9 p.m.
    From acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda and Japan’s Studio Chizu comes Mirai, a daringly original story of love passed down through generations.
  • Party in the Tropics: Masquerade  |  7 – 10 p.m.
    Gather your friends and head to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for a healthy dose of revelry and rejuvenation as our Tropical Forest Conservatory transforms into one of the city’s most unique nightspots. At this reoccurring party, you can make our paradise your own as you indulge in sweet and savory morsels, taste unique cocktails and seasonal beer selections, dance to the beats of a live DJ, and unwind amidst lush greenery and rushing waterfalls. You won’t find a venue like this anywhere else in the ‘Burgh!
  • Friday Extended Hours  |  Open until 10 p.m.
    Enjoy the gardens by twilight — it's the perfect way to wind down the week!

Sat., Nov. 2:

  • Family Barre Class  |  9 a.m
    Head to Phipps and bring the kids! Let's Move Pittsburgh and the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh are pleased to present a free, family-friendly barre class in our Special Events Hall. Led by a certified YMCA instructor, this class is uses a thoughtful series of low impact, isometric movements that are designed to produce results.
  • Botanical Drawing II: Volume, Texture and Details  |  9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    Continue to develop your observation and drawing skills to accurately render leaves, stems, roots and flowers in varying positions, capturing details and textures unique to the botanical subject.
  • Autumn Gourds in Watercolor  |  9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    Use masking fluid techniques and a variety of watercolor washes to enhance the illustration of a colorful autumn gourd. Create glowing layers of autumn color to a single or multiple gourd composition through a series of demonstrations, individual help and group discussion. Gourds will be provided but you may also bring gourds of special interest.
  • Healthful Snacks at School and at Home  |  10 a.m.  –  noon
    In this presentation, learn how you can plan healthful snacks for your child's school day, or to have at home! Our speaker will help you learn about many different options to make healthful, nutritious food more accessible. 
  • Healthy Eating for Kids  |  10:30 a.m.  – 12:30 p.m. 
    Join Let's Move Pittsburgh in the Tropical Forest Conservatory and learn how to implement healthy food options into your child's diet! 
  • Nature Lab Open Hours  |  11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    The revolutionary Nature Lab at Phipps is now open for you to discover.
  • Fall Mums Around the Color Wheel  |  1:30  – 3:30 p.m. 
    Join us each Saturday and Sunday in the Tropical Forest Conservatory for interactive demonstrations, activities and speakers that will deepen your connections to the beauty and wonders of nature, all free with admission!

Sun., Nov. 3:

  • One Health Day at Phipps | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    In celebration of International One Health Day, Phipps will offer special interactive activities for all ages that demonstrate how human, animal and environmental health affect one another, and what we can do to have a positive impact.
  • Origami  |  12:30 – 2:30 p.m. 
    Join us each Saturday and Sunday in the Tropical Forest Conservatory for interactive demonstrations, activities and speakers that will deepen your connections to the beauty and wonders of nature, all free with admission!
