There's always something new to see and do at Phipps! This weekly blog post provides a run-down of the latest happenings so you can plan your visit. Events listed below require no advance registration unless noted otherwise. 

Open Daily:

  • Van Gogh in Bloom
    Experience the captivating work of Vincent van Gogh brought to three-dimensional life through vibrant blooms, majestic trees and hand-crafted props as recreations of his legendary paintings take center stage at Phipps.
  • Butterfly Forest
    Watch colorful butterflies break free of their chrysalises to soar and glide among beautiful Phipps blooms. One may even land on you!
  • The Plants That Inspired Van Gogh: A Photographic Exploration
    In our Welcome Center Gallery, local photographer and Phipps volunteer Paul g. Wiegman highlights the essence of the plants that Vincent van Gogh was inspired to paint.
  • Invasives Most Wanted: A Youth Art Exhibition
    In the Center for Sustainable Landscapes Green Gallery, view fun "wanted poster"-style artworks about some of Western Pennsylvania's best known invasive species as created by middle school students involved in Phipps’ Fairchild Challenge.
  • Planets Earth
    A dynamic exhibit at the Center for Sustainable Landscapes addresses the pressing environmental issues of our time and proposes a new way of thinking about how to solve them.
  • Tropical Forest Cuba
    Experience the natural beauty and culture of Cuba, one of the most biodiverse Caribbean island nations on Earth, in our immersive new Tropical Forest exhibit.
  • Make the Switch at Phipps! Green Power Drive
    Join the more than 1,000 families who have switched their home electricity to 100% green power while visiting our Tropical Forest Conservatory and you can receive free Phipps membership!

Mon., Aug. 12:

  • Make-a-Craft Mondays  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Children are invited to engage in nature-inspired arts-and-crafts projects using recyclable materials.
  • Member Bring-a-Friend Day  |  9:30 a.m. — 5 p.m.
    The serene atmosphere at Phipps is best accompanied by friends and family, so we encourage Phipps members to share the beauty with a nonmember free of charge! Each cardholding member will receive free admission for one guest; just show your membership card or ID at the admissions desk to take advantage of this special offer.

Tues., Aug. 13:

  • Let's Move Pittsburgh Walk and Talk Series: Rasing Plant-Based Eaters |  9:30 – 10:30 a.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Can my children get the nutrients they need through a vegetarian diet? Whole food, plant-based eating is becoming a popular trend and it can be hard to know what is fact and what is fad. Local pediatrician and co-founder of One World Eating Dr. Keith Somers will explain the foundations of vegetarian eating for the whole family.

Wed., Aug. 14:

  • Story Time Wednesdays  |  10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics. 

Thurs., Aug. 15:  

  • Story Time Thursdays  |  10:30 a.m.
    Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics. 
  • Arranging with Local Flowers  |  7 — 9 p.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required 
    Learn how to transform basic farmers market bouquets and backyard cuttings into fun and unique arrangements. Celebrate the season’s beauty with locally sourced and sustainably raised flowers and greenery.

Fri., Aug. 16: 

  • Sports Field Solutions Workshop  |  9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required 
    Come learn with us as we discuss how natural grass sports fields can sustain more usage, all the while being safe for athletes to play on! From maintenance strategies, to soil health, our experienced panel of lecturers can help answer your questions on how to maintain the longevity and health of your sports fields, while also increasing hours of usage. 
  • Pot-a-Plant Fridays  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Kids can pot their own plant to care for at home. 
  • Environmental Film Series: Saving Sea Turtles  |  7 — 9 p.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required 
    Join us in Botany Hall Auditorium for a screening of Saving Sea Turtles: Preventing Extinction. A true story about people coming together to save the sea turtles we love, this feature-length independent documentary tells the larger natural history story of the world's rarest sea turtle, the Kemp's ridley turtle, and how humans pushed a healthy population to the precipice of extinction and are now slowly helping it to recover. 
  • Friday Extended Hours  |  Open until 10 p.m.
    Enjoy the gardens by twilight — it's the perfect way to wind down the week!

Sat., Aug. 17:

  • Nature Lab Open Hours  |  11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    The revolutionary Nature Lab at Phipps is now open for you to discover.
  • Meet a Scientist  |  1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
    Pressing science questions? Interested in becoming a scientist? Want to learn more about research being conducted? The Science Communication Fellows will be on hand to speak with you and answer all your questions! 

Sun., Aug. 18:

  • Essential Oils  |  1 – 3 p.m.
    Discover the uses and benefits of essential oils with Deb Bosco.
