Let’s Move Pittsburgh offers a Seed to Plate teacher training program that supports new or existing virtual or classroom style programs to improve children's health with the goal of helping every school in Allegheny County become the healthiest place for kids to learn and grow. The Seed to Plate Speakers Series will provide free virtual educational material in the following categories:

  • Bag the Junk: Increase healthy food and nutrition education in schools
  • Get Kids Moving: Increase physical activity in and out of schools
  • Teach Kids to Grow and Cook Food: Increase knowledge of how to grow and prepare fresh, healthy food
  • Sustainable Citizenship: Expose students to a variety of environmental topics to make a great impact in the community

Building a Wellness-Forward Classroom: Professional Development Resources

Not sure what resources are out there for nutrition, physical activity, and mental health virtual programming? Join Child Youth Development Specialist, Jill Cox, MS, RD and Professor Emerita of Physical Education SUNY Cortland, Dr. Diane Craft, PhD in learning how to cultivate a wellness-forward virtual classroom. This class will end with an exploration of the Let’s Move Pittsburgh Seed-to-Plate programing and virtual offerings, by LMP Coordinator, Maris Altieri, RD.

Growing a Fresh Start

Fri., July 17 | 10 – 11 a.m.

Not sure how to manage and care for your school’s garden at this time? Gabe Tilove, associate director of Adult Education and Community Outreach at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will be sharing  best practices and resources for vegetable garden care to help you keep your garden going strong during closures. Learn how to maintain and foster your students interests in horticulture and gardening virtually with the free Seed to Plate Curriculum. The Phipps Science Education and Research Department will be sharing how we engage students with online fieldtrips. In this session we will also discuss how to incorporate physical activity into our gardens and classrooms with LMP Program Coordinator, Sarah Cullo.

Get Cooking, Virtually!

Fri., July 24 | 10 – 11 a.m.

Join Dr. Amy Nevin, M.D., Physician Coordinator and Coach of the Diabetes Wraparound Program of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Tess Monks, Botany Hall Manager of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, to learn about the importance and the how-tos of developing an online cooking class. This session will review the clinical impacts of family-based cooking, the role cooking has on childhood development and give you an inside scoop on how to start your own virtual classroom cooking series.
